Low fat, low carb, Paleo, vegan, fat-free, GMO-free, gluten-free-so-called “healthy” food trends are everywhere, and unless you have a background in nutrition or food science, it can feel impossible to know which tropes to follow.

The biggest nutrition fads of the last few years have all taken huge blows in the last week. But will anyone listen? Over the last seven days, a roster of myth-busting nutrition studies were published showing probiotics are unnecessary, GMOs are harmless, and a gluten-free diet is a terrible idea unless you really need to be on it.

What’s in a word? “Integrative” versus “alternative” medicine, again

I’ve written a lot about the language issue with respect to alternative medicine. As I like to put it (at least in shortened form), first there was quackery. Quacks did not like that name at all, and thus was born alternative medicine. And the quacks did think it good-for a while.

A great line in the article (the emphasis is mine):

More importantly, it [complementary and alternative medicine] could be sold as the “best of both worlds,” which sounds great until you consider that one world consists of medicine that works and the other world consists largely of magic.

I am of the mind that the “incredible health benefits of probiotic” is for the most part  an incredible amount B.S.
